Relationships with allergic individuals
August 4, 2009

Relationships with food allergy sufferers can be difficult for people who are not familiar with the gravity and consequences of allergic reactions. When the right partner comes along, finding true love and enjoying life without taking unnecessary risks can be possible.

Being single does not mean that you have not found the right person to share life and tender moments with. For allergic individuals, the love one must be capable to understand the severity of allergic reactions and must be prepared to compromise their life style for the safety of their beloved. These criteria must always be a top priority when time comes to find Mr. or Mrs. Right even if sometimes, looking for love can become a challenging situation for Cupid.

Actually, the funniest part of dating a person with food allergies is the awkwardness of picking the right moment to explain about the allergens. For example, to greet a new lover with a first kiss may become a life threatening gesture for people with severe food allergies, because some allergic reactions are stronger than other and can be identified rapidly like breathing problems, skin rash, eyes itching and, many more. However, an anaphylaxis reaction could be provoked by a simple kiss on the lips after the other half ate an allergen within the past minutes or hours as slight traces are known to provoke deadly allergic reactions. In this case, a small talk to explain the symptoms and the reactions could prevent unusual circumstances on a first date and avoid any embarrassing situations from both parties. Could you imagine going to the emergency room after your first kiss? That situation could be very scary for the person who is not affected by allergic reactions; therefore, the importance to raise the issue and break the ice about the severity and the consequences of food allergies. That is why it is so important to explain and talk through the reactions, the symptoms and the allergens to make sure the love story can be a successful one, after the first sight.

Always remember that people who care and wish your happiness will always be supportive as food allergies are too serious to be left out from a relationship. Dating a person with severe food allergies can be complicated at first, but when the in-laws and entourage are aware of the situation and agree to stay cautious at any signs of allergens; it can bring out interesting conversations over dinners parties. Same things may happen with a new partner who accepts to make sensitive choices and eat differently to avoid any contact with allergens. Going to a different bakery, eating in a new restaurant where the cuisine is allergen free or cooking recipes at home with safe ingredients are excellent ways to participate in activities as a couple, in a new relationship. The right person, who comes along and understands the severity of allergic reactions, is a keeper! I have already found my perfect match, so good luck!
