Halloween Special
October 13 , 2009

During the month of October, we will post recipes, allergy free treats and more ideas to share with your little ghosts, pumpkins and witches.

Here are some brilliant ideas for kids to enjoy Halloween celebrations:

Be involved in activities with your family:

•  Visit a farm nearby to pick up pumpkins and take pictures with the kids.

•  Go to your local library for Halloween activities and participate with your children. Rent books and DVD's for them and bring their attention to something else than candies as children who suffer of food allergies may feel left alone due to their condition.

•  Bake treats and candies and wrap them up with bright paper. Look for orange and black colours to keep up with the Halloween spirit.

•  If you prefer to purchase allergen free candies, refer to the ‘Gluten-Free, Allergen-Free Halloween Candy Quick List 2009' posted on the Sure Food Living' website. Their list includes free Halloween Candy of the 8 of the most common allergen (eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat) and gluten. Visit their website for the complete listing. Also, if you place an order online, remember to order your allergen-free candies few weeks in advance.

Be prepared for the night of October 31st:

•  Before the night, make sure to eat a good meal with your children.

•  Dress your children in colourful costume and if you choose to apply make-up on their face and their neck, read the list of ingredients to avoid any traces of allergen which may cause rashes and allergic reactions. If in doubt, consult your allergist or the manufacturer.

•  With your children, talk about the importance to read the label on each sweet before to taste them. Offer to exchange unsafe candies for allergen free treats, money or toys.

•  If your children are too young, give away allergen free candies with them by sensitizing them at an early age.

Always carry an auto-injector and a cellphone just in case of an emergency. Be patient with parents and neighbours who are not alert, and support the cause of food allergies by helping them to understand the severity of allergies. Enjoy that special night with your children and trick or treat safely!

Happy Halloween from mallergies
