Kyle Dine: food allergy musician
November 2, 2009

Kyle Dine is a Canadian musician and founder of Allergy Translation. His music about food allergies is dedicated to helping children and parents within the food allergy community, and to live and enjoy life despite having food allergies and intolerances.

This first and unique food allergy musician has accepted to talk to us about his food allergies, his career and his mission for the benefit of the food allergy community. Mallergies is very proud to present and introduce him to all our readers.

'Being diagnosed with severe food allergies in the early 1980's, I had my share of challenges as I navigated my childhood years. My parents stressed many self-management strategies for me to follow as general public awareness was low and the policies which are around today were non-existent. My parents knew that in order for me to stay safe, I would have to learn myself how to deal with risky situations. I didn't meet anyone else at risk for anaphylaxis until my high school years, which made it somewhat isolating at times. However, when others went above and beyond in being conscientious of my allergies through support and care, it made me feel special while at the same time, letting me know that I can be as normal as the next kid.

Through this support, I eventually became empowered over my allergies throughout my teen and young adult years and gradually adopted all of the strategies and responsibilities my parents used in keeping me safe. This feeling of empowerment can't start early enough with children at risk for anaphylaxis. This is the main reason I wanted to create a resource for children with allergies where they could view the condition in a positive light with the ultimate theme that food allergies are manageable.

Making music about food allergies has been a truly rewarding experience as I get to spread optimism about managing food allergies, and see first hand how children are affected by it in a positive way. As allergy awareness grows throughout our communities and schools, it is remarkable to see how far we have come from the 1980's in terms of policy, education, research and advocacy. Whether it's through a song, a special allergy safe treat, a special accommodation from an educator, or praise from a parent, any effort that helps allergic children know that they can take control of their allergies and stay safe, goes a long way in creating safer communities.'
