Book: Flourishing with Food Allergies
November 11, 2009

Flourishing with Food Allergies is a reference and a guide for helping families and children to understand the complexity of food allergies.

Reading this book will bring confidence, peace and control of keeping things in perspective for your child with food allergies and for your entire family. The author A. Anderson is a mother of two boys with severe food allergies to eggs, dairy and peanuts. Very well-written, she explains her life story and provides useful and practical examples for parents with allergic children. Flourishing with Food Allergies is a comprehensive guide divided in two parties: the problems and the solutions.

In part one, the author tells her family story before having children and after having children with food allergies. She provides useful tips and practical examples from their personal life on the discovery, the allergy testing, the diagnostic and the acceptance of food allergies for her husband and herself. Also in the book, Ms Anderson shares over 14 interviews with parents from around the world who have experimented the diagnostic of food allergies with their babies, toddlers and children. The author approaches the possible relations between similar issues related to food allergies and food intolerances to other reactions such as autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and asthma. Ms Anderson focuses as well on other problems such as myths and facts regarding food allergies, and describes the food allergy community from around the world.

In the second part, the solutions are the main focus and again, to assure a better understanding of medicine and treatments, the author interviews health care professionals such as pediatrics, allergist, naturopath and psychologist. On a more personal note, her husband writes a touching passage on how to deal with food allergies and how to change your life for the benefit of your allergic children. Finally, Ms. Anderson contributes to the success of this guide by providing personal examples for keeping her sons' happiness from positive approaches with their food allergies during birthday parties, social activities, sports, schools and travels.

In conclusion, Flourishing with Food Allergies: Social, Emotional, and Practical Guidance for Families with Young Children is a reference tool for all parents of allergic children and for the food allergy community. It provides practical advice, facts and statistics and most importantly, acts as a support for parents of allergic children with personal notes, stories and experiences.
