November 24, 2009

Our latest discovery for parents and children with food allergies will bring fantasy to your bedtime story ritual. Discover and enter in the magical world of the author Amy Recob, and her colourful and charming BugaBees.
Food allergy can be a difficult topic to deal with small children when it comes to explain that food can be a threat to their life. It can be very hard for a parent's heart, but with tools and books like this one, The BugaBees will spread a positive message to educate your love ones about food allergies.
A similar story happened to Amy Recob, the author and creator of the BugaBees, who approached the message of food allergies for her allergic daughter. The tale of this book is to communicate a positive story with characters who share the same condition of children with severe food allergies. The illustrations are so beautiful, colourful and lively that children will soon recognize themselves across the magical bees. By keeping the story close to the reality and picturing it in an imaginary world, the author created a BugaBee for each of the most common allergens such as egg, fish, milk, peanut, shellfish, soya, tree nuts and wheat.
Along this magical tale, children can easily be identified to one or several characters and understand more easily the problematic, the seriousness and the challenges of food allergies. In the book, the author described day-to-day situations and places where children play and learn. The moral of the story is to stay safe, healthy and enjoy life with food allergies. This book is also a very good tool for parents to teach and educate their children who just received a food allergy diagnosis.

From left to right:
Butterfly (allergic to shellfish), Cricket (allergic to peanuts), Bumblebee (allergic to eggs), Ladybug (allergic to fish), Beetle (allergic to milk), Firefly (allergic to tree nuts), Caterpillar (allergic to wheat) and Dragonfly (allergic to soy).
The BugaBees' website is also another good reference point for continuing education. Parents and children will learn about the particularity of the most common allergens, the signs, the symptoms, the reactions and the foods which may contain these allergens. This interactive website will continue to inform and raise awareness about food allergy and may open up for longer discussions regarding your child's allergies.
Finally, the author agreed to share few words on her work:
'Food allergies are never fun, but best friends always are! This light-hearted story explores the daily routines of eight best buggy friends such as Beetle, Cricket and Butterfly, as they face their respective food allergies with positivity and poise. At home and at school, at the park, or on the beach, BugaBees find ways to stay safe, have fun, and remember that the joy of friendship is far sweeter than any food they can, or in some cases, can't have.
The BugaBees: Friends with Food Allergies brings fresh optimism and fun to children dealing with the everyday challenges of managing a food allergy. Additional activities and talking points in the back of the book inspire further learning and teaching opportunities for young children and their caregivers.'
